Let's Celebrate Kwanzaa Together!

Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan African holiday celebrated each year from December 26 – January 1. Join me and my followers as we learn about the holiday created by Dr. Maulana Karenga and get introduced to new stories and traditions!

Day 1: Umoja

Come along as I teach about the first principal of Kwanzaa: Umoja (Unity)!

I’ll introduce Dr. Maulana Karenga’s seminal Kwanzaa text, The African American Holiday of Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community & Culture, and we’ll read A Kwanzaa Celebration Pop-Up Book written by Nancy Williams and illustrated by Robert Sabuda.

Day 2: Kujichagulia

Let’s learn about the second principal of Kwanzaa: Kujichagulia (Self-determination)!

We’ll read Seven Spools of Thread: A Kwanzaa Story, written by Angela Shelf Medearis and illustrated by Daniel Minter.

Day 3: Ujima

It’s time for the third principal of Kwanzaa: Ujima (Collective work and responsibility)!

Join me and my child Nwachukwu  as we read My First Kwanzaa, written and illustrated by Karen Katz.

Day 4: Ujamaa

We’re back for the fourth principal of Kwanzaa: Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)!

We’ll enjoy My First Kwanzaa Book, written by Deborah M. Newton Chocolate and illustrated by Cal Massey.

Day 5: Nia

Let’s get into the fifth principal of Kwanzaa: Nia (Purpose)!

We’ll explore the Kwansaba, a poetic form invented by Eugene B. Redmond and read poetry by various writers including Saeed Jones, I Adeficha, and yours truly.

Day 6: Kuumba

We near the end of our series with the sixth principal of Kwanzaa: Kuumba (Creativity)!

We’ll dig deep into the well of black creativity through a performance of poetry, story and song.

Day 7: Imani

We conclude our celebration with the seventh principal of Kwanzaa: Imani (Faith)!

Join me for an offering from my personal faith as I read I Corinthians 13, often referred to as “the love chapter.”
